What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format built from the AV1 video codec — roughly half the size of a JPG at the same quality, which is why Unsplash, Pexels and image CDNs now serve it by default. Browsers open it fine; older apps, Office documents, printers and upload forms mostly don't. Hence this page.

Some AVIFs look flat/dark after converting elsewhere — why?
Those are 10-bit HDR AVIFs; naive converters clip them. Your browser's decoder tone-maps them properly, which is what we use — and if it still looks washed out, run it through the un-HDR fixer.
